Getting ready for a move takes planning and there’s plenty to do before the actual removal day. To help to make it easier for you and to ensure that you’re possessions are safely packed, we have prepared this list of useful hints.
Air Conditioning Equipment – The standard window fitting air-conditioners can be removed by us. Unfortunately we are unable to refit them at the new location.
Beds and Bedding – We will dismantle your beds and pack the components and reassemble at the new location. Mattresses will be shrink wrapped or placed in mattress cartons depending on the storage requirements. Packing material will carry a charge. Your bedding should be packed in clean cartons. Items such as pillows and blankets can be packed into furniture draws.
Books – Books are surprisingly heavy and need to be secured in strong cartons. Don’t pack them into drawers and don’t leave them loose in bookcases.
Canned Goods – Canned goods are heavy when packed in bulk so they need to be in small but strong cartons. Don’t overfill the cartons, keeping them at 50 lbs or less.
Fragile Goods Such As China, Glassware, and Silverware – These should be wrapped individually in paper (newspaper is fine) and placed in a container. The largest and heaviest items should be at the bottom with plates and similarly shaped objects. Pad the bottom and the top of the container with paper before starting to fill it. Silverware is best packed in its original box if available. Otherwise wrap silver items in cloth, low sulfur-content paper, or tissue and then place in suitable boxes.
Clothing – For a small extra charge we can move your clothing on their hangars in wardrobes boxes that we will supply for the purpose. This prevents your clothes becoming wrinkled and they are as fresh as when you placed them in your own wardrobes.
Drawers – We are often asked if all drawers should be emptied. This actually depends on specific circumstances. If the move involves many flights of stairs or areas with difficult access, it would be better to pack drawer contents into cartons. Lighter articles such as blankets, pillows, and cushions can be packed in drawers if required. Obviously no breakable items, liquids or dangerous items such as firearms should be left in drawers.
Large Kitchen Appliances – Washers, dryers freezers, refrigerators, and stoves need to be disconnected by you before they can be moved. Electrical appliances may need to have the motor properly secured. We can arrange this for you if necessary. Fridges and freezers should be defrosted and dried before removal day. Their trays and shelves should be removed and packed separately.
Foodstuffs – Unfortunately no perishable foods can be transported. Any non-perishable items can be moved when the pick-up and delivery take place within 48 hours.
Items of Jewelry and Other Valuables – These should not be packed but kept by you in your immediate possession.
Kitchen Utensils – To avoid damage, kitchen utensils should be packed in cartons or barrels, with plenty of padding around them. Small appliances such as toasters, irons, waffle irons, and food mixers need to be wrapped separately.
Lamps and Lampshades – Small lamps can be wrapped and packed in cartons after removing the lampshades. Lampshades are best wrapped in white tissue paper and packed in cartons marked “Fragile”.
Mirrors – We will remove mirrors from walls if they are not fastened. We do not re-hang them at the new location. Any mirrors on top of furniture will be removed and packed and replaced at the new destination.
Lawn Mowers and Similar Gasoline Powered Tools – All gas tanks must be drained and oil tanks must be empty. We can not carry any flammable materials or mixtures.
Paintings and Framed Photographs – Place small pictures in between blankets or cushions in drawers or cartons. Large/valuable paintings need to be properly crated. Small pictures can be safely placed between the folds of blankets or pillows in drawers or cartons. Large and valuable pictures and paintings must be padded, wrapped, and crated for moving.
Records, Tapes, DVDs and CDs – Records are best packed on their edge and placed in small cartons to avoid too much weight. The same applies to CDs and DVDs.
Plants – We are happy to transport plants and small trees only if the move will take place within 48 hours. If you can move these items yourself it is recommended that you do so as there is no liability accepted for plants.
Rugs – We will lift and roll rugs for you. Any tacks should be removed before we arrive.
Toiletries and Medicines – Please make sure that all stoppers and lids are secure before wrapping jars and bottles in paper and packing upright in suitable cartons. Make sure you do not pack any medicines that you might need before reaching your new location.
Garden and Other Tools – Most tools can be placed in strong cartons without the need for protective wrapping. Valuable tools can be wrapped to avoid scratches or other damage.
